Bhutan

The kingdom that measures itself in happiness — and means it

6–8 days
Best: March–May, September–November
Groups: 4–20

Why Bhutan?

Bhutan is the country that decided, decades ago, that Gross National Happiness was a better metric than GDP — and then went ahead and built a country around it. There's no traffic light in the capital. Every building is built in traditional style by law. Mobile use is limited by choice. It's the closest thing left to how the Himalaya used to feel, and it doesn't take long here to feel your shoulders drop. The Tiger's Nest hike is the postcard, but Punakha's dzong, Bumthang's valleys, and the everyday warmth of the people are what people bring back.

Highlights

Paro

Arrival airport (one of the world's most dramatic landings), the Rinpung Dzong, and gateway to Tiger's Nest

Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang)

Clinging to a cliff at 3,120 m; a 4–5 hour round-trip hike

Thimphu

Capital without traffic lights; Buddha Dordenma, weekend market, dzong

Punakha

Old capital, spectacular dzong at the river confluence, the suspension bridge

Dochula Pass

108 chortens against the Himalaya on a clear day

Bumthang Valley

The spiritual heartland, sacred monasteries, quieter

Haa Valley

For a proper off-the-beaten-path day

Phobjikha Valley

Winter home of the black-necked cranes (Nov–Feb)

Plan this trip your way

Every EternaLink trip is built from scratch for your group. What that means in practice:

Custom itinerary — pacing, pauses, and priorities designed around you
Vetted local partners — the same on-ground teams we've worked with for years
24/7 support on trip — one person, one number, one WhatsApp thread
Flight, visa, and insurance handled — you show up, we've done the rest
Transparent pricing — no surprise "optional excursions" mid-trip

First conversation is free. No commitment, no pressure.

Quick Tips

  • 6 days minimum for Paro + Thimphu + Punakha; 8 for Bumthang add-on
  • Do Tiger's Nest on day 4 or 5 — you'll be acclimatised
  • October is arguably the best month — clear skies, festivals (tsechus), autumn colour

Experiences we can build in

1

Traditional hot stone bath in a farmhouse (river stones heated to boiling, herbs, quietly life-changing)

2

Archery match with locals — Bhutan's national sport

3

Meditation session with a monk at a working monastery

4

Bhutanese cooking class with ema datshi (chilli-cheese) — spicier than most Indian food

Good to know

Visa

Indian passport holders need a permit (not a visa) — arranged via a licensed Bhutanese operator (us). Straightforward.

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

Bhutan charges a daily tourism levy — currently discounted for Indian travellers. We include this in quotes.

Currency

Ngultrum (BTN), pegged 1:1 to Indian Rupee. INR is widely accepted.

Language

Dzongkha; English widely spoken and is the language of instruction in schools.

Getting there

Direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bagdogra, Guwahati to Paro on Druk Air / Bhutan Airlines (~2–5 hrs).

No smoking

Bhutan is the world's only country where the sale of tobacco is essentially banned.
