7–14 days
Best: April–October (dry season)
Groups: 4–25

Why Indonesia?

Bali is what most people come for, and Bali deserves it — but Indonesia is enormous, and one island barely scratches the surface. You can watch dragons on Komodo, climb an active volcano at sunrise on Java, dive Raja Ampat's reefs (the most biodiverse water on Earth), or just sit in Ubud eating your way through a rice-field lunch. The country's real power is that it lets a group with wildly different appetites — one person wants beach, one wants temples, one wants adventure — get all three inside one trip.

Highlights

Bali

Seminyak

Bali's upscale dining & beach-club capital; sunset cocktails are a ritual. Pricier than Kuta. Excellent, central base for South Bali.

Kuta & Legian

Best learner-surf beach & cheapest base, but brash & backpacker-heavy. Waterbom is one of Asia's top water parks.

Canggu

Digital-nomad & surfer hub with Bali's best brunch/café scene. Traffic on 'the shortcut' is notorious — always allow extra time.

Uluwatu & Bukit Peninsula

World-class surf & dramatic clifftop temples. Monkeys at Uluwatu snatch sunglasses — beware. Single Fin's Sunday sessions are legendary.

Jimbaran

Fresh grilled-seafood dinners with your toes in the sand at sunset are the signature. Calm bay suits families; minutes from the airport.

Nusa Dua

Self-contained luxury enclave — calm, clean & safe, but sanitised with little local life. Ideal for families & easy first-timer trips.

Sanur

Calm, low-key & family-friendly ('Snore' to some). Best beachfront cycling on Bali and the main jump-off for boats to Nusa Penida/Lembongan.

Ubud

Bali's cultural & wellness heart. Stay near the centre to walk; hire a driver for outlying temples/terraces. Secure belongings from monkeys; nightly dance shows.

Kintamani & Mount Batur

The pre-dawn Batur trek (start ~3:30 am) for sunrise above the clouds is a Bali highlight. Bring a warm layer. Easy day-trip from Ubud.

Sidemen

The 'old Ubud' — a serene rice-terrace valley beneath Mount Agung with few crowds. Perfect for a slow, authentic couple of days. Minimal nightlife.

Amed & Tulamben

Bali's diving capital — the shore-accessible Liberty wreck is world-famous. Quiet, low-key & great value; stay overnight given the long drive.

Munduk & Bedugul (Lakes)

The iconic lake temple (on the 50,000-rupiah note) & cool misty waterfalls — a refreshing break from beach heat. Roads wind a lot; hire a driver.

Lovina

Quiet, old-school north-coast resort famed for sunrise dolphin boats (can get crowded with boats). Good base for the northern waterfalls & hot springs.

West Bali NP & Menjangan

Bali's wild, uncrowded far west — superb wall diving off Menjangan & rare Bali starlings. Often paired with a Java crossing. One for nature lovers.

Nusa Penida

Jaw-dropping cliffs & manta snorkelling — Bali's most dramatic scenery. Roads are rough; allow a full day or overnight. Use reputable fast boats (seas can be choppy).

Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan

A mellow small-island escape beside Penida — easier & calmer. Snorkel with mantas and cross the rickety Yellow Bridge to tiny Ceningan. Slow island pace.

Jakarta, Java & the Archipelago

Jakarta

Indonesia's vast, energetic capital & main international gateway — chaotic but rewarding for food, history & nightlife. Beat the legendary traffic with the MRT & Gojek, and use it as your hub to fly onward across the archipelago.

Yogyakarta (Jogja)

Java's soulful cultural capital — royal courts, batik, gamelan & the warmest street life in Indonesia. The perfect base for Borobudur & Prambanan; don't miss the sunrise temple trips & Merapi tours.

Borobudur & Prambanan

Two of Asia's greatest monuments within reach of Jogja — a 9th-century Buddhist mountain of stupas and a soaring Hindu temple city. Sunrise at Borobudur is unforgettable. Upper-level access is now regulated/quota'd — book official tickets ahead.

Bandung

Java's cool-climate 'Paris of the East' — volcanoes, tea estates, surreal crater lakes & a buzzy cafe/outlet scene. The new high-speed train from Jakarta makes it an easy escape from the heat.

East Java Volcanoes (Bromo & Ijen)

Indonesia's most dramatic volcano duo — Bromo's smoking cone at dawn and Ijen's eerie blue fire (visible only in pre-dawn dark). Cold & high; bring warm layers & a torch. Often combined over 2–3 days.

Labuan Bajo & Komodo

See the world's largest lizard in the wild, then island-hop a stunning marine park — Padar's three-bay viewpoint & Manta Point are highlights. Day trips or 2–3 day liveaboards; always stay with ranger guides near dragons.

Lombok & Gili Islands

Bali's quieter neighbour — epic Rinjani trekking, mellow surf beaches & the car-free Gili islands for snorkelling with turtles. Easy fast-boat hop from Bali; the Gilis range from party (Trawangan) to serene (Meno).

Lake Toba

A vast, serene caldera lake (from a supervolcano) with a laid-back island in its middle and rich Batak culture — a cool, tranquil antidote to busy Java & Bali. Pairs well with Bukit Lawang.

Bukit Lawang

One of the few places on Earth to see semi-wild orangutans in their rainforest home. Trek with licensed guides (1–3 days), keep your distance from the apes, and loop it with Lake Toba for a great North Sumatra trip.

Tana Toraja

One of Asia's most extraordinary living cultures — elaborate funeral rites, cliff tombs & soaring ancestral houses. Attending a ceremony respectfully (with a guide & a small gift) is profound. Remote but unforgettable.

Bunaken & Wakatobi

Sulawesi is a diver's dream — Bunaken's coral walls, Wakatobi's untouched reefs & Lembeh's bizarre 'muck' critters. World-class for underwater photography; choose your base by what you want to see.

Raja Ampat

The planet's ultimate marine wilderness — unmatched coral & fish diversity amid jaw-dropping karst islands. Remote, costly & worth it; pick a liveaboard or island eco-resort. NOTE its season (Oct–Apr) is opposite to Komodo.

Tanjung Puting

Cruise into the Bornean jungle on a traditional klotok houseboat to meet wild & rehabilitated orangutans — sleeping on deck under the stars is magical. A 2–3 day eco-adventure; book a reputable operator & guide.

Visa

Indian passport holders currently qualify for Visa on Arrival (VoA) / e-VoA for tourism (30 days, extendable). Fee applies. We confirm at booking.

Currency

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Cash still king outside major hotels.

Language

Bahasa Indonesia; English widely spoken in Bali, less so elsewhere.

Getting there

Direct flights from major Indian cities to Bali (Denpasar) via Kuala Lumpur / Singapore / Bangkok (~7–9 hrs).

Bali "quiet day" note

Nyepi (usually March) is a full 24-hour island shutdown. Beautiful, but plan around it.

When to go — month by month

Broadly: dry season (Apr–Oct) suits Java, Sumatra, Bali & Komodo; wet season is Nov–Mar. KEY QUIRK: Raja Ampat's best diving (Oct–Apr) runs OPPOSITE to most of the country.

Know before you go

Entry / Visa

Indian passport holders can use Visa on Arrival / e-VoA (B1) at major airports (Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, etc.) — 30 days, extendable once for 30 more; ~IDR 500,000 (≈ USD 35). An electronic customs declaration applies on arrival. Verify current rules; carry an onward ticket & proof of accommodation. (NOTE: the IDR 150,000 tourist levy applies to BALI only, not Jakarta/Java.)

Domestic Flights are Essential

Indonesia spans 17,000+ islands — internal flights (Garuda, Citilink, Batik, Lion Air, etc.) are how you cover ground, with Jakarta as the main hub. Build in buffer time between connections; budget carriers can delay.

Currency

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Cards work in cities & hotels; carry cash for markets, rural areas & islands. ATMs are common in cities; Gojek/GoPay & OVO e-wallets are widely used.

Connectivity

Cheap SIM/eSIM (Telkomsel has the widest reach). Good 4G in cities; patchy on remote islands (Raja Ampat, Toraja, Kalimantan).

Getting Around Cities

Jakarta has MRT, commuter rail & TransJakarta BRT — plus Gojek/Grab (bikes & cars) that beat the notorious traffic. Bandung now has high-speed rail from Jakarta. Java has a good train network — book ahead in peak periods.

Ramadan & Lebaran

During Ramadan some restaurants adjust hours; around Idul Fitri (Lebaran) millions travel home ('mudik') — transport books out, prices spike & some businesses close. Dates shift each year — check before booking.

Religion & Etiquette

The world's largest Muslim-majority nation, but very diverse (Hindu Bali, Christian Toraja & Flores, etc.). Dress modestly at mosques (headscarf for women) & in rural areas; use your right hand; remove shoes in homes & prayer spaces; ask before photographing people or ceremonies.

Food

A regional feast: nasi goreng, satay, rendang, gado-gado, soto, bakso, martabak, Padang (Minang) cuisine, and sambal everywhere. Street food is cheap & superb — pick busy stalls. Vegetarians can manage (tempeh, tofu, gado-gado, sayur) but should ask about shrimp paste/terasi (useful for Indian travellers); halal is standard outside Bali.

Health & Safety

Drink bottled/filtered water; stomach upsets happen — eat fresh & busy. Comprehensive travel insurance (incl. diving/adventure & medical evacuation for remote areas) is essential. Indonesia is seismically active (volcanoes & earthquakes) — heed local advisories; watch traffic & beach rip currents.

Volcanoes & Diving

Sunrise volcano hikes (Bromo, Ijen, Rinjani) start pre-dawn and get cold & high — bring layers & a torch. For diving, certify in advance & confirm operators' safety standards. Remember Raja Ampat's season (Oct–Apr) is OPPOSITE to Komodo (Apr–Nov).

Note on Bali

Bali has its own dedicated guide in this series — this workbook focuses on Jakarta, Java & the wider archipelago beyond Bali. The two combine well for a multi-island trip (short flight or fast boat).

Suggested routes

JAVA HIGHLIGHTS (7–10 days): Jakarta + Yogyakarta (Borobudur/Prambanan) + Bandung + Bromo/Ijen

SUMATRA NATURE: Lake Toba + Bukit Lawang orangutans

EASTERN ISLANDS: Lombok/Gili + Labuan Bajo/Komodo

DIVE & WILDLIFE: Raja Ampat, or Sulawesi (Bunaken/Wakatobi + Toraja), or Tanjung Puting orangutans
