Sri Lanka
Eight UNESCO sites, wild elephants, and a train ride you'll never delete
Why Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is the great compact trip of South Asia. In 8–10 days you can climb a 5th-century rock fortress at Sigiriya, watch leopards and elephants in Yala, ride one of the world's most beautiful train journeys through the hill country tea estates, and finish with a Galle sunset. The distances are short, the food is quietly one of Asia's best (and finally getting the recognition), and the island's wildlife density surprises everyone. Come for the culture, stay for the curry.
Highlights
Colombo
A fast-modernising seaside capital — stroll Galle Face at sunset for street food & kites, browse chaotic Pettah bazaar, and admire the lakeside Gangaramaya Temple. Most use it as a quick start/end; a day is plenty before heading out.
Negombo
The handy beach town right by the airport — perfect for a first or last night without Colombo's traffic. Watch the colourful fishing fleet & lagoon life, eat fresh seafood, and ease into (or out of) island time.
Kandy
Sri Lanka's cultural & spiritual capital, home to the revered Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Time the evening puja, catch a Kandyan dance show, and stroll the lake. The gateway to the hill country & the famous train to Ella.
Sigiriya & Dambulla
The Cultural Triangle's star — climb 5th-century Sigiriya at dawn (or Pidurangala opposite for the classic photo of the rock), then marvel at Dambulla's cave temples. Nearby Minneriya offers superb dry-season elephant safaris.
Ancient Cities (Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa)
Sri Lanka's two great ancient capitals (both UNESCO) — Anuradhapura's vast sacred stupas & 2,000-year-old Bodhi tree, and compact Polonnaruwa's exquisite ruins & serene Gal Vihara Buddhas (best cycled). Pair with Sigiriya.
Ella & Hill Country
A laid-back hill town beloved for the photogenic Nine Arch Bridge & easy hikes (Little Adam's Peak at sunrise). The Kandy-to-Ella train through tea country is one of the world's great rail journeys — sit by the open door. Ravana sites add a Ramayana link.
Nuwara Eliya
Sri Lanka's cool, colonial-era tea capital — emerald plantations, crisp air & misty mornings. Tour a tea factory, and rise early for Horton Plains' World's End cliff (clouds over by mid-morning). The nearby Sita Amman Temple & Ashok Vatika draw Ramayana pilgrims.
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
A revered pilgrimage mountain climbed through the night to reach the summit footprint by sunrise — when the peak casts a perfect triangular shadow. Strenuous but unforgettable. Go in season (Dec–May); start ~2am, dress warm, bring water & a torch.
Galle & the South Fort Coast
One of Asia's most atmospheric colonial towns — wander Galle Fort's ramparts at sunset, browse its chic boutiques & cafes, then hit the nearby beaches (Unawatuna for swimming, Hikkaduwa for snorkelling & turtles). The dry-season hub of the south.
Mirissa & Weligama
The south's beach-and-whale hub — Mirissa offers some of the world's best blue-whale watching (Nov–Apr; go with responsible, slower operators), photogenic Coconut Tree Hill, and Weligama's gentle waves for learning to surf. A laid-back tropical base.
Yala National Park
Sri Lanka's premier safari park & one of the best places on Earth to spot a wild leopard, plus elephants & sloth bears. Go at dawn with a good guide; it gets busy, so consider quieter Block sectors. Pair with the south-coast beaches.
Udawalawe National Park
The best park for guaranteed elephants — large wild herds roam open grassland, making for easy, reliable viewing (great with kids). Visit the Elephant Transit Home for the orphan feeding. Less crowded & more open than Yala; an easy add-on between hills & coast.
Arugam Bay
Sri Lanka's surf capital & boho beach hideaway — its season (May–Sep) mirrors the south coast, so it's the place to be when the southwest is wet. Even non-surfers love the chilled vibe, lagoon safaris & nearby Kumana wildlife.
Trincomalee & Nilaveli
The east coast's beach gem — long white sands at Nilaveli, superb snorkelling at Pigeon Island, and the dramatic clifftop Koneswaram Hindu temple. Whale watching runs May–Sep here (opposite to Mirissa). Best when the rest of the island is wet.
Jaffna
Sri Lanka's distinct Tamil-Hindu north — long off-limits during the civil war, now welcoming visitors with magnificent kovils, a colonial fort, offshore islands & superb spicy Jaffna cuisine. A fascinating cultural counterpoint, with strong South-Indian resonance.
Sinharaja Rainforest
Sri Lanka's last great primary rainforest — a UNESCO biodiversity treasure packed with endemic birds, frogs & butterflies. Always trek with a licensed guide; wear leech socks & expect mud. A must for naturalists & birders chasing the island's endemics.

Know before you go
Entry / Visa
Sri Lanka is currently VISA-FREE / FEE-FREE for Indian passport holders — a free 30-day tourist entry (double-entry) via the ETA system, extendable up to 270 days. Applying for the free ETA online IN ADVANCE at the OFFICIAL portal (eta.gov.lk) is recommended (and at times has been required) for smoother immigration — rules have shifted recently, so verify the current requirement before travel. Carry a passport (6+ months), return ticket & accommodation proof. Use only the official site (avoid paid third-party copies).
Getting Around — Car & Driver
For a multi-stop tour, hiring a car with a driver-guide is the popular, good-value way to see Sri Lanka (distances are short but roads slow). Use tuk-tuks for short hops — the PickMe or Uber app gives fair metered fares.
The Trains
The Kandy–Ella hill-country train is one of the world's most scenic rides — book reserved seats ahead in peak season. The coastal Colombo–Galle line is also lovely. Trains are cheap but can get crowded; sit by the open door for the views.
Currency
Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards work in cities & hotels; carry cash for tuk-tuks, markets, small towns & park fees. ATMs are in towns. The economy has stabilised since the 2022 crisis, but keep a cash buffer.
Connectivity
Cheap local SIM/eSIM (Dialog, Mobitel) at the airport; good 4G in populated areas; patchy in deep hills & forest.
Climate Strategy
The two monsoons hit OPPOSITE coasts: the South/West coast, hill country & Cultural Triangle are best Dec–Mar/Apr; the East & North (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Jaffna) are best May–Sep. So there's always a good region — just match the season to the coast. Oct–Nov is the wettest island-wide.
Religion & Etiquette
Buddhist-majority (with Hindu, Muslim & Christian communities). Dress modestly & remove shoes/hats at temples (cover shoulders & knees); never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and Buddha tattoos are a serious offence. Full-moon Poya days are holidays — alcohol sales are restricted. Use your right hand.
Food
Rice & curry, hoppers (appa), kottu roti, string hoppers, dhal, sambols, seafood, Jaffna crab curry & Ceylon tea. Vegetarian food is abundant & excellent (rice & curry is naturally veg-friendly) — ideal for Indian travellers; flavours are familiar yet distinct. Drink bottled/filtered water.
Wildlife & Safety
Sri Lanka is safe & friendly. Choose responsible safari & whale-watching operators (keep distance; slower boats). Beware ocean rip currents on some beaches. The 2022 economic crisis has eased and tourism is back to normal. Watch for cheeky monkeys & touts at major sites.
Ramayana Trail (note for Indian travellers)
Sri Lanka has many sites linked to the Ramayana — Sita Eliya/Ashok Vatika near Nuwara Eliya, Ravana Falls & Cave near Ella, Ussangoda, Munneswaram, Rumassala — a popular themed circuit for Indian/Hindu pilgrims, easily woven into a hill-country & cultural itinerary.
