Vietnam

North to south, one country that keeps reinventing itself every 200 km

10–14 days
Best: February–April, August–October (climate varies by region)
Groups: 4–25

Why Vietnam?

Vietnam is long, thin, and completely different at the top and bottom. Hanoi in the north is old-Asia atmospheric — lakes, lantern-lit alleys, French colonial cafés, motorbike chaos. Down south, Ho Chi Minh City is a fast, modern, coffee-obsessed metropolis with a wildly different accent, food, and rhythm. Everything between (Halong Bay, Sapa's terraced rice fields, Hue's imperial city, Hoi An's lantern-lit old town, the Mekong Delta) is worth its own trip. Which is why we don't rush it — 10 days is minimum, 12–14 is better.

Highlights

Hanoi

Master road-crossing: walk steady, don't stop. Try egg coffee & bun cha. Best base for Halong, Sapa & Ninh Binh day/overnight trips.

Halong Bay

An overnight cruise beats a day trip. Quieter alternatives: Lan Ha Bay & Bai Tu Long Bay. Cruises are cancelled in storms — keep buffer days.

Sapa

Hire a local Hmong/Dao guide — supports the community & better trails. Pack layers. September = golden harvest; spring = blossoms.

Ninh Binh

Climb ~500 steps at Mua Cave for the iconic dragon-ridge view. Easy 1–2 day add-on from Hanoi; rowers often paddle with their feet.

Ha Giang

The 3–4 day motorbike loop is THE experience. Hire an easy-rider if not a confident rider. Permits needed for border areas — arrange locally.

Hue

Former imperial capital — try refined royal cuisine. Combine with the scenic Hai Van Pass drive down to Da Nang & Hoi An.

Hoi An

Get clothes tailor-made (24–48 hrs). Release a river lantern on full-moon nights. Cooking classes abound. The old town floods some Octobers.

Da Nang

Best-value beach city & transport hub — Hoi An is 30 min away, Hue ~2 hrs. Dragon Bridge breathes fire Sat & Sun ~9 pm.

Phong Nha–Ke Bang

Son Doong needs booking ~1 year ahead & a big budget. Paradise & Phong Nha caves suit everyone. Asia's premier adventure-caving base.

Nha Trang

Vietnam's dive capital. Strong Russian-tourist scene. Take the sea cable car to VinWonders island for the day.

Da Lat

Vietnam's canyoning & abseiling capital and a honeymoon favourite. A cool escape from southern heat — superb local coffee & wine.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Vietnam's energetic, modern hub & gateway to the Mekong and Cu Chi Tunnels. World-class street food. Bargain hard at Ben Thanh Market.

Mekong Delta

Stay overnight in Can Tho to catch the dawn floating market before crowds. Homestays give the most authentic feel. Pairs naturally with HCMC.

Phu Quoc

30-day visa-free entry to the island for most nationalities (verify current rules). Resort heaven; snorkelling off An Thoi; sunsets at Dinh Cau.

Mui Ne

Asia's kitesurfing capital. Catch sunrise at the dunes; try quad-biking & sand-sledding. Calmer & more laid-back than Nha Trang.

Con Dao Islands

Vietnam's best-kept secret — wild, pristine & uncrowded. Summer turtle nesting; sombre war-prison history; eco-luxury (Six Senses).

Plan this trip your way

Every EternaLink trip is built from scratch for your group. What that means in practice:

Custom itinerary — pacing, pauses, and priorities designed around you
Vetted local partners — the same on-ground teams we've worked with for years
24/7 support on trip — one person, one number, one WhatsApp thread
Flight, visa, and insurance handled — you show up, we've done the rest
Transparent pricing — no surprise "optional excursions" mid-trip

First conversation is free. No commitment, no pressure.

Quick Tips

  • Don't try to do north AND south in under 10 days — you'll spend the trip in airports
  • Central Vietnam (Hue/Hoi An/Da Nang) is the underrated part of the country
  • Feb–April is the safest window country-wide; typhoons hit the centre Sep–Nov

Experiences we can build in

1

Overnight junk-boat sleep on Lan Ha Bay

2

Hoi An lantern-making workshop + tailor-made ao dai

3

Cyclo tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter with a street food guide

4

Cu Chi tunnels + War Remnants Museum with a proper historian, not the standard package guide

Good to know

Visa

Indian passport holders can apply for a Vietnam e-Visa valid up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. We handle it.

Currency

Vietnamese Dong (VND). You'll be a millionaire on arrival — carry a small calculator.

Language

Vietnamese. English is patchy outside tourist zones — the guide matters here more than in Thailand.

Getting there

Direct/1-stop from India to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City via Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore (~6–8 hrs).

Domestic flights

Vietnam is long. Plan on 1–2 short flights between regions.

When to go — month by month

Vietnam is a year-round destination, but the 'best' region shifts by month. Use this to sequence a multi-region trip.

Know before you go

Visa / Entry

Most nationalities use the official e-visa (apply online via the Vietnam Immigration portal). Phu Quoc island has a 30-day visa-exempt arrangement. Rules & durations change — CONFIRM your nationality's current requirement before booking. Indian passport holders generally need an e-visa.

Currency

Vietnamese Dong (VND). Cash is king for street food, markets & rural areas; cards work in hotels & malls. ATMs are common in cities. Tipping isn't expected but is appreciated for good service & guides.

Connectivity

Cheap, reliable local SIM/eSIM (Viettel, Mobifone, Vinaphone) with strong 4G/5G. Buy at the airport or phone shops with your passport. Wi-Fi is near-universal in cafés & hotels.

Getting Between Cities

Domestic flights (Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, Bamboo) link the long N–S country cheaply. The scenic Reunification Express train runs Hanoi↔HCMC. Sleeper buses are budget-friendly. In cities, Grab (car & bike) is the easy default.

Renting a Scooter

Hugely popular & freeing, but traffic is intense. Legally you need a valid licence + International Driving Permit; check your travel insurance covers it. Always wear a helmet. Not for nervous first-timers in big cities.

Food to Try

Pho, banh mi, bun cha, com tam, bun bo Hue, fresh & fried spring rolls, banh xeo, and ca phe sua da (iced coffee) — plus egg coffee in Hanoi. Street food is cheap, fresh & a highlight; pick busy stalls with high turnover.

Costs & Budget

One of Asia's best-value destinations. Street meals & local buses keep budgets low; shoulder seasons cut accommodation costs. Bargain politely in markets (not in fixed-price shops).

Etiquette

Remove shoes when entering homes & many temples. Dress modestly at religious & royal sites (cover shoulders/knees). Ask before photographing people, esp. ethnic-minority communities. A smile goes a long way.

Safety

Vietnam is very safe for travellers. The main hazard is traffic — cross roads slowly & steadily. In HCMC, watch for bag/phone snatching by passing scooters; keep valuables secured.

Health

Drink bottled/filtered water. Comprehensive travel insurance (incl. medical & scooter cover) is strongly recommended. Carry basic meds; pharmacies are widespread in towns.

Weather Strategy

Because climate differs sharply by region, sequence your trip by season (see the 'When to Go' tab). Avoid Central Vietnam in Oct–Nov (flooding); enjoy the South Dec–Apr and the North Sep–Nov & Mar–Apr.

Suggested routes

Classic 2-week N→S: Hanoi → Halong → (Sapa/Ninh Binh) → Hue → Hoi An/Da Nang → HCMC → Mekong. Beach add-ons: Phu Quoc, Nha Trang or Con Dao. Adventure add-ons: Ha Giang loop or Phong Nha caving.
